Deep within the enchanting rolling fields, lived a shepherd boy. His being was essentially unadulterated, and unsophisticated. His primary duty was to care for his herd of rams.
Their gentle baas and the murmuring of the gales across the single tree on the hilltop were his only associates. Day in day, guarding his responsibilities imbued in him a notion of quiet fulfillment.
But, there were occasional moments of loneliness, when the shepherd boy would yearn for companionship. In one such instance out of sheer boredom, the shepherd boy conceived a naughty scheme.
Stories of wild beasts hunting on sheep had been around for a while in the hamlet. So, the boy chose to exploit this fear and played a trick on the townsfolk.
One day he dashed into the village screaming “Wolf! A wolf is that has taken my sheep!” The frightened villagers sprinted up the hills for rescue but discovered nothing threatening.
The boy chuckled at the confusion on their faces. This game laughed for a few more days. But, one morning, a real wolf did charge at the grazing sheep. The shepherd boy ran for help, screaming “Wolf, Wolf!” But this time, no one showed up.
Frustrated and alone, the boy struggled against the wolf but could protect only few of his sheep. Devastated, he returned to the town only to be met with a reprimand on honesty and the repercussions of dishonesty.
The tale of this shepherd boy has been handed down generations as a mediaeval parable to teaching the importance of honesty, the consequences of lying and the risks of crying wolf. Moreover, it emphasizes how trust once lost, is tough to earn back. It's a story as pertinent today as it was anciently. click here
